Tateo Takahashi was born and raised in the Akita Prefecture of Japan. He began his shamisen study with his brother, Yujiro Takahashi, one of Japan's most well known Tsugaru Shamisen players. At the age of 19, Mr. Takahashi moved to Tokyo and began his career as a professional shamisen player. In 1969 he came to the United States and settled in San Francisco before moving to Los Angeles in 1976. He is the only Tsugaru Shamisen professional in the United States. In 1984 he founded the Los Angeles based shamisen group "Takahashi-kai." Takahashi's film credits include "Tattoo" and "Vietname War Story." In 1993 he joined Kokin-Gumi.

August 18 @ 12:45pm my Father lost his battle to cancer. As soon as I got the word from my Mom that this might be his last. I rushed over to the hospital and a few seconds after I arrived. He took his last breath and went to be with the Lord. Thank you to all those who's supported his music and musical talents. I know in my heart his memories and music will live on. Daddy, I Love You and we'll meet again someday. Rest In Peace

*August 24, 2006* Today was my Father's funeral @t Fukui Motuary in Downtown Los Angeles. It was a very peaceful and enlightening ceremony with a buddist monk who was very close to my Father as the speaker. Many people attended to show their respects. Some of whom I didn't even know who they were. But it was a very very nice funeral ceremony and I'm sure that my Father is now in heaven peacefully looking down upon us. Let us from this day forward live in strength, tranquility, and wisdom. Thank you very much for all your support in my Father's music and talents. He will be missed but NEVER forgotten. Rest In Peace, Dad ! We Love you and we'll reunite again someday.
*** UPDATE !!! ***
On October 30th, 2007 Kokin Gumi's Band Leader Masakazu Yoshizawa lost his own battle with Cancer and passed away in his own home. His Talent and his Music will surely be missed but not Forgotten.
